What We Learned Today...September 29th

A snap of the video we watched today!

ELA: We started out the day with a brief silent reading period before finishing up the creation story we began on Monday.

Health: We picked up where we left off yesterday and discussed the consequences of positive and negative body image.  We also took some time to view the TED Talk, "Why Thinking You're Ugly is Bad for You" by Meaghan Ramsey, which covered this topic perfectly.

Math: After doing such an amazing job at Cross Country yesterday, students were exhausted after school and pleaded for me to move the Math test.  After some serious thinking, I gave in and bumped the Math Exam to Monday.  Instead of the test, students were given the entire period to work on their Mathletics assignments to help practice for Monday.

Genius Hour: Students continued pitching their topics/essential questions to me, before they could begin working on their projects.  Most students now have the green light to begin their projects and only a few students will need the weekend to tweak their questions.

*Bresciani Bunch Voluntary Cross Country Meet:
This week I spoke with Ms. Roundell and she told me that the turn out for Grade 8 students at these events are pretty dismal.  After talking to the class about this, we decided it might be a nice idea to run this event as a team and support the few Grade 8's at Deshaye that are currently running these races. I'm so happy that so many students in our class are on board with this and I can't wait to see the mob of Deshaye Grade 8's crossing the finish line later this week! Please remember to bring back your permission forms ASAP so we're all set to go next week!

This is a project that I started doing with my class three years ago, and I am extremely excited to do it again as it allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. The students have been tasked with brainstorming something they are passionate about and formulating an essential question. On Tuesday we will start to go through these questions and formally begin the project!

Terry Fox Walk:  During the last hour of the day we met up with our little buddies from Ms. Olsen's room and walked around the Deshaye area in honour of Terry Fox. What We Learned Today...September 12th

Having some fun in Science yesterday.

ELA: Well we know the year is officially underway when we have to start the beginning of the year assessments. Today we started out the class by going through each test question on the RAD (Reading Assessment Diagnostic) together before students began to work on the assessment. Due to length of this exam, students will receive another day or two to complete it.*It is important to remember that these assessments are not included as part of a students grade, but rather serve as a benchmark so we can see their growth over the course of the year.

French: Today we continued practicing the numbers 1-100 in French, before reviewing the days of the week and the months of the year.  Next class we will be going over some basic questions you might have when meeting someone for the first time.

Math: We switched things up a little bit today, and the students worked in our classroom instead of the Library and worked hard on the textbook assignment from Pg. 51.

Health: Students were given the entire period to work on their "All About Me" presentations.

What We Learned Today...September 8th

Taking a second to pose during the Egg Drop prep!

ELA: This morning we started out the day by learning about how the students will be assessed this year, as  our division has shifted to Outcome Based Reporting.  We took some to go through what Curricular Outcomes are, as well as the "I Can" statements that align with each outcome.

Health:In Health we kicked off our Body Image unit by discussing what exactly Body Image is, and investigated the three different body types as well as stereotypes that males and females face.

Math: The students were introduced to a relatively new approach to teaching that we will be participating in this year. This new approach is called a "Flipped Classroom" and it involves teaching in a way that sees the students learn new content online through the use of educational videos prepared by their teacher. This approach allows for more personalized interactions with the students during class time instead of lecturing. More information about this can be found on our Flipped Math Blog. (If the link isn't working see the link to it at the top of this blog under "Quick Links")
Egg Drop: During the last hour of the day we headed outside for a special egg drop competition with our fellow Grade 7/8's students from Mr. Rieger's room. Students tested out their creations from earlier this afternoon to see if they could protect their egg from a drop off of the roof.

*As I mentioned on Tuesday, I am so lucky to have such an amazing group of young people to work with this year. I'm positive we are going to have an amazing year together and look forward to all the fun to come. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
